We will be leaving at 16.30 on Thursday 23rd Feb as the doors open at 18.00, and past experience has shown that not getting there on time means you don’t get to go in.  We’ll also probably stop somewhere for food on the way back if people want to.

The talk:

AirTanker will provide the RAF with a reliable, safe and efficient air transport and air-to-air refuelling service for 24 years.  In addition to its air-to-air refuelling role, the aircraft will be capable of carrying passengers (up to 291) or freight (up to 43 tonnes) or a combination of the two.  It will also have an aeromedical evacuation capability (including critical care patients or up to 40 stretchers). The Future Strategic Tanker Aircraft (FSTA) programme combines best practice from civil aviation with RAF operational expertise and military ethos to create a most efficient and effective operational solution for the Royal Air Force and the first aircraft is due to arrive at RAF Brize Norton in December 2011, with No. 10 Squadron reformed to be the first Voyager Squadron.  The Squadron is currently undertaking planned familiarisation training to build experience on the aircraft type.  Tonight’s talk will reveal the capability requirements, the FSTA concept, the programme development, service delivery and some of the lessons learnt from the programme.

Some Background:

There are two companies that form AirTanker.  AirTanker Ltd is a Special Purpose Vehicle company, which holds the Future Strategic Tanker Aircraft (FSTA) Contract with the Ministry of Defence.  It is responsible for the timely delivery and financial aspects of the FSTA programme, holding two subcontracts with Airbus Military and AirTanker Services for the delivery of the aircraft and operation of the service.  AirTanker Services Ltd is a Special Purpose Vehicle company established in 2008 to deliver the FSTA service to the Royal Air Force at RAF Brize Norton.  AirTanker Ltd and AirTanker Services Ltd have five shareholders – EADS, Thales, Babcock, Cobham and Rolls-Royce – who are also sub-contractors for the programme, making FSTA an ambitious programme.  It is not simply about the procurement of aircraft, but covers all aspects of an integrated aircraft service over a 24 year period, ranging from the provision of the infrastructure – including a two-bay hangar and associated office accommodation – and a full flight crew and engineer training service, to aircraft maintenance, despatch and ground support.  The infrastructure is all in place and ready for full operational service at RAF Brize Norton, targeted for 2014.

HMS Daring is the lead ship of the Type 45 or ‘D’ class of air defence destroyer in the Royal Navy and the seventh ship to hold that name.

The trip is THIS SATURDAY, leaving at 11.30am from campus – more details will be provided when you sign up on BathStudent - don’t forget to login first though!

She was launched in 2006 on the Clyde and conducted contractor’s sea trials during 2007 and 2008. She was handed over to the Royal Navy in December 2008, entered her base port of Portsmouth for the first time in January 2009 and was formally commissioned on 23 July 2009. As the lead ship of the first destroyer class built for the Royal Navy since the Type 42 in the 1970s, she has attracted significant media and public interest. The price tag of approximately £6.6 billion for the six ships represents a significant investment into the future needs of the Royal Navy.
